Energy Switch Process Explained

This page explains the energy switching process in lovely bite-size pieces so it’s easier to understand 😃

Key points to remember throughout the switching process:

  • Your switch takes about 18 days.
  • Your existing supplier will contact you to settle your 'final bill'.
  • Your energy supply will never be interrupted.

  1. You’ve decided to switch
  2. The switch is underway
  3. You’re existing supplier says bye
  4. The energy switch happens
  5. Settling your final bill
  6. Submitting meter readings

Step 1. You’ve told us you want to switch to Homeshift (Yay!)

Day 1 - 2

As soon as you’ve given us your payment details and confirmed you’d like to switch to Homeshift energy, we go away and double-check all your details and find any remaining info we need to start the switch process - meter readings, meter serial numbers, property info, etc.

Step 2. Your switch is underway, and you’ve got a switch date!

Day 3 - 5

We confirm to you that your switch is underway and give you an exact date that you energy supply will seamlessly switch over to Homeshift.

We will also contact your existing supplier and tell them to get ready to switch your supply over to Homeshift.

Please note - your existing supplier: Your existing supplier will probably get upset at the thought of you leaving. They will try to steal you back with attractive offers that might appear cheaper in the short term… but more on this later!

Step 3. Your existing supplier will message you to say goodbye 👋

Day 10 (ish)

Your supplier will message you to say goodbye, sorry to see you go, thank you for your custom etc, etc. It’s hard for us to tell you exactly when this will be (it’s out of our hands) but they’re usually quite quick.

Please note - bait and switch: Your existing provider will also mention how easy it is to stay with them… sneaky things! Traditional energy companies offer cheap fixed price plans to entice you to join them (or not to leave). Their cheap fixed rate plans last 12-18 months but when that period finishes, the cost of the plan skyrockets and becomes far more expensive than a fairly priced variable rate plan We don’t think that’s okay. In the long run, you would be overspending by £100’s every year.

So... be aware of this when you’re existing provider messages you or calls you.

Step 4. Your switch date has arrived. Hoorah!

Day 18

Today is the day! Your switch date is here and with zero effort, your energy supply seamlessly changes from your existing supplier to Homeshift. Everything works the same, but you feel happier on the inside... 😍

Please note - payment: On the morning of your switch date we will also take the first card payment for your first months energy. We will send you a text message to let you know exactly when this is happening.

You can also change your monthly pay date after this first payment has been made.

Step 5. Settling the final bill with your previous provider

1 - 3 weeks (ish)

Your current supplier will send you a final bill for the energy used before switching to Homeshift (or if you’re a new mover, the time between your move in date and the date you switched to Homeshift).

Unfortunately, different suppliers are different levels of lazy so we can’t tell you exactly when this will happen, but it will.

Please note - pushy providers: Some providers have a tendency to be quite aggressive chasing you for this money. If you have any doubts about anything they’re asking you for, contact Homeshift. We’re here to help.

Step 6. Submitting energy meter readings online

Monthly

After your first full month using Homeshift energy, we’ll ask you to submit your energy meter readings online. You can do this by logging in to your Homeshift dashboard.

We ask you to submit meter readings regularly so you know you’re only paying for the exact amount of energy you use. When you submit your readings, we update our records and your monthly bill cost is adjusted based on your actually usage. We want to be as fair as possible.

Don’t worry though, we know it’s not an easy thing to remember that’s why (if we have your mobile number) we send out a meter reading reminder text message at the end of every month.

You can keep track of your switch anytime using your Homeshift dashboard. Try logging in and checking the live status of your switch now!
